The Link shelving unit is a bespoke furniture piece that explores the opportunities for a different method of joinery for flat pack furniture. The Link is made exclusively from stained 18mm thick plywood and makes use of fabricated wooden joints to make connections between the shelves, creating a linked grid geometry that helps support the entire structure. The idea for the design is to create a standing shelving unit that appears to float off the wall without the obvious appearance of additional structural members.
The three slender uprights have horizontal protrusions to support the shelves and provide fixing points on each. The material is optimised to provide enough stability without making the structure flimsy and the assembly of the joints from the side is honest but unique, creating an element of surprise when revealed. The angled shelves that form the link structure create an interesting dynamic geometry as do the white joints which stand out like tetris blocks in suspension. The true effect of the floating shelves can be seen when in use as shown below.
