Snuza's Pico smart baby monitor is the next generation of baby monitors in their range following the Hero baby monitor. Primarily developed to prevent the occurrence of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), the Pico monitors the baby's breathing, temperature and sleeping position which are displayed on a smartphone app that tracks the baby's progress. The app also provides sleep analytics so that parents can understand how well their baby is sleeping. The monitor features cutting edge technology in a compact form factor. The small size of the Pico (40% smaller than the Hero monitor) means that it's less invasive and more comfortable for the child when in use. The Pico uses BLE to communicate between the monitor and a smartphone, thereby maximising battery life. The Pico has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which charges through purpose designed charging points on its underside when placed on the charging cradle. The Pico's charging cradle also doubles as a protective case.
There were some challenges that were overcome during the design process. In order to achieve the small form factor, close collaboration between the design and electronics teams was critical. The Pico has numerous electronic components that have to be positioned in precise positions in order for the product to function effectively, these include capacitive sensors, temperature sensor, charing contacts, vibration motors and the Bluetooth antenna. These were carefully laid out to maximise the ease of assembly, minimize part count and keep the monitor as small as possible. The final assembly process makes use of ultrasonic welding to bond the enclosure together, thereby ensuring good ingress protection while maximising the use of internal space. The clip design features an overlocking cam arrangement that is elegantly incorporated into the soft form of the Pico. The clip attaches the Pico firmly to the babies nappy, giving the parents confidence that it won't fall off during use.
The Snuza Pico builds on the success of Snuza's previous products which have gained a positive global following. It's simple, considered design follows Snuza's brand identity and seamlessly integrates with Snuza's product range. Further visualisations of the packaging design can be seen below.
